Scientists are developing a ‘stay sober’ pill that could stop you from getting drunk, no matter how much alcohol you drink, a new report has revealed.
American and Australian scientists have carried out research focused on a pill that limits the effects alcohol has on the brain and the glial cells.
The experiment, conducted on mice, showed they didn’t get drunk, or even tipsy, despite consuming large amounts of alcohol.
The unnamed pill is being designed so that it shuts down brain immune responses. The experiment found that the animals who took the pill not only stayed sober, but their reflexes were far better than those who let their immune cells work normally.
“When a mouse gets drunk, it is quite similar to a human that’s drunk. It can’t work its motor co-ordination properly. If you stop these immune cells from working, the animals didn’t get drunk.” Says researcher Mark Hutchinson, from the University of Adelaide.
According to the report, published in the British Journal of Pharmacology, researchers also found that the pill could help fight infections such as meningitis.
Do you think a ‘sober pill’ would take out the fun of drinking alcohol or would you be happy to say goodbye to those 'what did I do last night' moments?
