Belgian artist Ben Heine doesn’t believe you have to choose between photography or drawing, reality or imagination – he merges all four into one instead.
The 28-year-old has been working on these remarkable images since 2010, taking photographs and overlaying black and white pencil drawings that give the scenes a surreal twist – an idea he says came to him by accident when he was writing a letter one day.
Pencil vs Camera was soon born: the playful title for a project that Heine says is really about unifying styles and techniques to create pictures that ‘represents the close connection between the viewer, the artist and the artwork’.
“I just make art for people. I want them to dream and forget their daily troubles,” he says.
“I used to write poems many years ago, I want to convey a poetic and philosophical meaning into my pictures, each new creation should tell a story and generate an intense emotion, like a poem, like a melody"
