Los Angeles' Belasco Theater hosted the second incarnation of the Los Angeles Beard and Mustache Competition on Sunday, providing a ludicrous amount of outstanding face furniture.

Organised by the Los Angeles Beard and Mustache Club (LAMBC), and founded in 2010, the competition allows both men and women to submit their facial hair for judging in nine separate competitions for nine individual facial hair combinations.

Among the categories are prizes for the best 'business' beard, best styled moustache, best natural moustache, best sideburns or mutton chops, the Whiskerinas award for female entrants and, of course, the prestigious 'freestyle' award, given to he with "the most creative and artistic" beard.

The seven hour event in LA was judged by a panel of veteran beard-growers and had a "1920s Hollywood" theme, which explains the vintage clothing.

Facial hair of all manners, shapes and sizes were on display, including octopus-like tentacled beards and untamed hedges of facial hair unfurling themselves down the chests of competitors.

Curiously, there was a large contingent of female participants, with some rocking elaborately dyed fake beards or beards laced with strings of flowers.

Spectators were able to gain entry to the event for the cost of a mere $20 for a day stacked with fun for facial hair enthusiasts.

In addition to the competitions, patrons could make use of the bars, live music, raffles and stalls set out at the event, which also raised money for the Ronald McDonald House Charity of Pasadena, which helps families with sick and terminally ill children.
