Owen Coyle has been sacked by Championship side Bolton Wanderers after the club's dismal start to the Championship season.
The Trotters have won just three of their 11 matches and were eliminated from the Capital One Cup by League One side Crawley Town.
Coyle has lost almost half of his 126 games in charge of the club he played for during the 90s.
He told the club website he had “always been driven to act in the best interests of the club and care passionately about it".
Chairman Phil Gartside added: “Owen poured his heart and soul into the job, both on and off the pitch, and he led our club with great dignity during some very challenging times.
“It is the right time for a change. We set a target at the beginning of the season and want to get back on track.
Coyle joined the Trotters in January 2010 in acrimonious circumstances, having deserted rivals Burnley halfway through the Premier League term. The Clarets were relegated that season.
Despite a decent first half of the 2010-11 campaign in which Bolton lost just five league games and were praised for their brand of football, they still finished 14th in the Premier League table - the same position they finished in the previous year.
And disaster struck the following year when they were relegated by a single point on the final day of the season after they failed to defeat Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium.
The Trotters suffered key injuries ahead of the beginning of the season but their failure to sign a striker to replace Johan Elmander was a negligent mistake by the Scot.
Coyle commendably lead the club through Fabrice Muamba's health scare when he suffered a cardiac arrest in March, but he has now become the second Scottish manager to leave a relegated Premier League club after Steve Kean's resignation last month.
