Nintendo has a problem.
According to the gaming website Gamasutra, the Japanese gaming giant sold "well under" 100,000 Wii U consoles in January.
The next-generation console won plaudits from reviewers - including ours - for its innovative touchscreen controller and classic Nintendo games.
But customers have been less enthusiastic, failing to pick up the device in large numbers.
It was previously announced that Nintendo sold 460,000 Wii U systems in December - a good start, though less than the original Wii.
But after a lack of new software titles in the New Year, sales have declined.
Gamasutra estimates, based on NPD figures, that just 45,000-59,000 consoles were sold in North America in that period - worse than the PS3 or Xbox 360 did in any month since their release.
Nintendo may have an ace or two up its sleeve, however - the recently announced Mario Kart, Super Mario and Zelda titles coming to the system should inspire a sales boost.
Meanwhile Sony and Microsoft are preparing their next-gen consoles, with the former's unveiling set to happen in under a week.
