The Ukip candidate accused of making a Hitler salute in the run-up to May's local elections has provided further evidence he is in fact, not a Nazi.

Alex Wood had always maintained the picture of him appearing to make the gesture was actually him trying to stop his girlfriend photographing him "imitating a pot plant".

At the time the explanation was met with scepticism . However Wood has now supplied the following photo of him imitating the pot plant to The Huffington Post UK in an attempt to prove his innocence.

Wood said: "Sometimes the truth is actually stranger than the fiction."

'I Am A Pot Plant'

Nigel Farage stood by Wood after he was accused of making the fascist salute. The Ukip leader told HuffPost UK: "These things happen - I should know."

On Thursday police also concluded that racist comments on Facebook attributed to Wood "did not appear on the account".

Wood stood in the Somerset county council ballot winning 665 votes and coming second.
