They say fortune favours the brave. And if brave means having your hand cut open and palm lines rejigged, it appears the Japanese have got things sussed.
According to a report by The Daily Beast, people in Japan are having palm plastic surgery in an attempt to trick fortune tellers and change their fate.
The surgery, which is available at Shonan Beauty Clinic, reportedly costs ¥ 100,00 (£700 ) and is performed with an electric scalpel.
What's more, surgeons purposefully make wobbly incisions to give the feeling of authenticity.
“If you try to create a palm line with a laser, it heals, and it won’t leave a clear mark," Dr. Matsuoka, a surgeon at Shonan Beauty Clinic tells The Daily Beast. "You have to use the electric scalpel and make a shaky incision on purpose, because palm lines are never completely straight."
He adds: "If you don’t burn the skin and just use a plain scalpel, the lines don’t form. It’s not a difficult surgery, but it has to be done right.”

Dr Matsuoka notes a difference between what men and women hope to gain from the surgery.
According to his experience, men hope for financial successes, while women want their marriage lines extended.

Of course, this type of surgery can be risky.
Speaking to The Huffington Post cosmetic surgeon Dr. Barry Handler said the surgery could potentially damage tendons, nerves or arteries.
"It doesn't make any sense," he said when asked about Dr Matsuoka's work. "He's trying to purposely create a scar for no other purpose than making a scar that looks like a line."
