Luis Alberto hit a hat-trick in front of Brendan Rodgers as Liverpool Under-21s defeated Sunderland 5-2 at Anfield on Tuesday night.

With no Europa League fixtures to fulfil this season, Rodgers opted against watching the first Champions League matchday to see the Spaniard's treble and strikes by Jack Dunn and Raheem Sterling.

Luis Alberto joined the Reds for £6.8 million from Sevilla in the summer and made his debut as a substitute in the win against Manchester United earlier this month.

New signing Tiago Ilori also started ahead of the Reds' Saturday fixture at home to Southampton.
