'Triton' Oxygen Mask Claims To Draw Air From Water While You Swim

A South Korean designer claims to have invented an oxygen mask which can draw air from water as you swim.

The idea is pretty remarkable - being able to breathe underwater indefinitely is an idea as old, or older, as the jetpack or flying car.

The new concept by Jeabyun Yeon is described as "a very convenient oxygen respirator concept that allows us to breathe under water for a long time by simply biting it".

The device relies on "future" batteries with 30 times the capacity of current batteries, Yeon said.

Which is a pretty big clue that although this looks neat, it's not going to happen.

Oh, and then there's the issue of science.DeadSeaNews has compiled a thorough take-down of the concept, pointing out that to supply one human breath with 35 mg of oxygen would mean filtering about 5.92 litres of water, with 100% efficiency.

To supply you with enough oxygen for one minute or normal resting breathing it would need to pump through 24 gallons of water a minute, without any apparent pump to create that flow of water.

UPDATE: As many people have pointed out, there are lots of other reasons that the invention will never exist, including the fact that oxygen poisoning is a thing, and that the Jedi got there first.
