But sometimes they look like this...
It's got tentacles, one massive eye and a big clumsy motor on top - it's almost cute.
This is the Honeywell RQ-16A T-Hawk, a gasoline-powered, remote controlled drone used to look for improvised explosive devices in Afghanistan.
The little beast can be carried in two backpacks and can fly at a pretty impressive 80mph.
They have also been used for non-military applications such as surveying the damaged Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear power station.
