Bobbi Kristina Brown has passed away at the age of 22, it has been confirmed.

In a statement, the Houston family confirmed Bobbi had died on Sunday.

"Bobbi Kristina Brown passed away July, 26 2015, surrounded by her family," the Houston family said in a statement. "She is finally at peace in the arms of God. We want to again thank everyone for their tremendous amount of love and support during these last few months."

Police said they had been called in response to her "drowning" at her home in suburban Atlanta. Nick Gordon, the man she called her husband, was at the scene and tried to revive her while a friend called 911.

"Bobbi Kristina is fighting for her life and is surrounded by immediate family," a Houston family statement said two days later. "We are asking you to honor our request for privacy during this difficult time. Thank you for your prayers, well wishes, and we greatly appreciate your continued support."

Unconfirmed reports after she had been hospitalised had claimed the young woman’s brain function was "alarmingly low” and that the prognosis did "not look good”.

It was an eerie parallel to her mother’s death, which occurred after she too was found face-down and unresponsive in a bathtub in 2012 as the music industry prepared for the Grammy Awards.

Houston's lifeless body was discovered in a foot of water in her bathtub at the Beverly Hills Hotel by her assistant.

Authorities found prescription drugs and listed heart disease and cocaine use as contributors, but concluded that she accidentally drowned.

Then 18, Bobbi Kristina, became so distraught that she needed to be hospitalised.

"She wasn't only a mother, she was a best friend," she told Oprah shortly thereafter.

Bobbi Kristina inherited her mother's entire estate, but not her voice. Aside from her family's short-lived reality TV show "The Houstons: On Our Own," she has mostly appeared in online "selfies" and paparazzi images.

Houston met Bobby Brown at the Soul Train Music Awards in 1989. The pair married in 1992, much to the dismay of Houston's family. It was a toxic relationship, characterised by domestic violence and drugs.

Bobbi Kristina was born a year later, and was just a toddler when Houston described herself as a "functioning junkie" to S2SMagazine. Her husband also struggled with addiction, so by 2002, the family moved to suburban Atlanta to attend the healing services of a singer-turned evangelical preacher.

The little girl made a few appearances on "Being Bobby Brown," the reality show that infamously captured her parents fighting, swearing and appearing in court. The Hollywood Reporter said "not only does it reveal Brown to be even more vulgar than the tabloids suggest, but it manages at the same time to rob Houston of any last shreds of dignity."

Soon, the man Bobbi Kristina would refer to as her husband joined the family. Houston never formally adopted Nick Gordon, but he became like a brother to Bobbi Kristina. And when Houston sought rehab in California in 2004 and divorced Brown in 2007, she kept the children with her.

The pair referred to each other as siblings but a month after Houston's death they went public with their relationship.

Bobbi Kristina often commented on her marriage to Gordon but as she lay in hospital in the days before her death, her father’s lawyers issued a statement to say they had never wed.

"To correct earlier reports, Bobbi Kristina is not and has never been married to Nick Gordon," read a statement released by Brown's attorney, Christopher Brown.
