The controversy surrounding ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ finalist Richard Jones is showing no signs of dying down, with the magician he’s been accused of copying has now offered his side of the story.
Earlier this week, the ‘BGT’ hopeful landed a place in this year’s final thanks to an impressive trick in Tuesday night’s live show, which left both viewers and the judging panel dumbfounded.
However, shortly after his victory, some people remarked that his trick was noticeably similar to one performed by ‘America’s Got Talent’ magician Collins Key, who has now addressed the controversy.
Speaking to The Sun, he explained, with only a hint of shade: "It is flattering when another performer imitates my work."
Reacting to the backlash Richard has received, Collins added: "I have worked hard to create a unique innovative style that elevates our art to new heights and to create something that has a meaningful connection with my audience.
Richard has previously defended himself over the trick, insisting that “evolving” and “updating” ideas is “what magic is all about”.
He previously said: "New ideas won’t always be found nowadays so I’m thinking what I can do that’s similar but make it more understanding and more updated."
A ‘BGT’ spokesperson has also addressed the matter, claiming: “Simon Cowell was not a judge on ‘AGT’ when the trick was originally performed. The first time he has ever seen it was this week.”
Richard is one of 10 finalists chosen by the public to be in with a chance of performing at this year’s Royal Variety Performance, as well as winning a cash prize of £250,000.
Two further acts will be chosen this weekend, with both the judging panel and viewers at home choosing a wildcard from the eliminated semi-finalists.
