Escaped Wallaby Causes Mayhem On West Yorkshire Rail Network Says Train Operator

'This is definitely a new one for us.'

An escaped wallaby caused “mayhem” on the rail network, according to a train operator.

The creature made its way on to the tracks between Marsden and Slaithwaite in West Yorkshire at about 11am on Friday.

Trains were forced to run slower than normal as they passed through the area until the marsupial was reported to be clear of danger.

A spokesman for TransPennine Express said: “It did cause a little bit of mayhem for about half an hour with the 10.33 Manchester Airport to Middlesbrough service delayed by 14 minutes, but the line was quickly cleared.

A Wallaby on the line between Huddersfield and Stalybridge is causing delays of up to 10 minutes to trains between these stations.

“This is definitely a new one for us but most importantly we are pleased that the wallaby was not harmed on the tracks and is hopefully now finding their way home.”

The wallaby is believed to have escaped from a farm near Slaithwaite.

National Rail tweeted about the incident, which caused a string of amusing responses.
