Unique Baby Names: Parents Changed Baby's Name After Three Months Because It 'Made Them Cringe'

'No one could remember it and no one could pronounce it.'

A couple made the decision to legally change their three-month-old daughter’s name because it made them “cringe”.

Maryland-based Carri Kessler and her husband Will initially named their daughter Ottilie because they’d “always loved the name” after hearing it from a British friend.

But just hours after birth, they encountered strange reactions when they told people what their daughter was called.

“The nurse came in and asked what her name was, and we said, ‘Ottilie’ and she was like, ‘What?’” Kessler told Today.

“No one could remember it and no one could pronounce it. Anytime anyone said her name, I kind of cringed.”

Trouble peaked when Ottilie was six weeks old and Kessler’s grandmother said she still kept forgetting the name.

The new parents resented introducing their daughter because of the “odd” reactions they were faced with.

When she was three months old, the couple decided to rename their daughter after weeks of uncertainty.

They sent out a mass email to friends and family explaining they’d changed Ottilie’s name to Margot.

“I feel like it’s a good story for her, it will be part of her lore,” Kessler added, admitting that the name change took a lot of stress out of her life.

In more controversial baby naming news, a couple who wanted to call their baby the Spanish word for ‘Wolf’ won a legal battle to do so in August 2016.

Naki and Maria Javierre were allegedly told they couldn’t call their child the Spanish word for wolf, ‘Lobo’, by the Madrid Civil Registration in July 2016.

So they launched a Change.org petition with their reasons behind the name. After garnering more than 26,000 signatures, the name was approved.
