NASA launched not one but three sounding rockets into the auroras this week in a bid to learn more about the phenomenon.
Now, the agency has released incredible images of the rockets in action, and we reckon they’re among the most stunning launch photos we’ve ever seen.
NASA said in a statement that the mission was a success, but it hasn’t yet released analysis of the data.

Phil Eberspeaker, chief of the Sounding Rocket Program Office, said, “The ability to successfully launch these three rockets is a testament to the capabilities of the range, science and sounding rocket teams.
“Great coordination is required to institute the complex countdown required to prepare and launch three rockets in a short period. The team did a fantastic job executing these launches.”

Echo 1, a spherical balloon with a metalized skin, was launched by NASA on 12th August 1960. Once in orbit the balloon was inflated until it reached its intended diameter of 30 metres and it was then used as a reflector to bounce radio signals across the oceans.
