Police in Los Angeles may investigate an alleged sexual liaison between teenage pop star Justin Bieber and a now 20-year-old woman because it violates California's statutory rape law, a police commander said.
Commander Andrew Smith said no report has been taken about the October 2010 incident at LA's Staples Centre.
However, officers could look into the matter after various media outlets reported that Mariah Yeater filed a paternity suit earlier this week against the 17-year-old singer.
Miss Yeater had just turned 19 when she says she and Justin, then 16, had a sexual encounter after one of his concerts.
California law states anyone who has unlawful sex with a minor and not more than three years older is guilty of a misdemeanour, which carries up to a one-year jail sentence.
