Parts of Britain woke up to snow and heavy rain in the latest of the bad weather to hit the country.
Snow was forecast to move in during the early hours of the morning in parts of Wales, the Midlands and parts of the South East. Up to 8cm was predicted to fall over high ground in Shropshire, mid Wales and parts of the West Midlands as heavy rain brought by a low pressure system turned to snow.
The weather system also brought high winds over the south coast, echoing gales that hit the area earlier this week.
Paul Mott, forecaster with MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association, said the low pressure system was expected to track eastwards across the English Channel.
He said: "I think locally we could see up to 8cm of snow over some of the hills of Shropshire, across mid Wales and the far west of the Midlands."
The Met Office also forecast snow for Wales, the Midlands and parts of southern and south-east England from the early hours, saying it was likely to accumulate even at low levels for a time with the risk of up to 10cm on higher ground.
Heavy rain has hit some parts of the country - the Environment Agency put 34 flood alerts in place, including in the Midlands, the North West, the South East and the South West. There were minor delays on the A27 in Chichester due to flooding, according to the Highways Agency website.
Andy Page, chief forecaster at the Met Office, said: "Snow, heavy rain and strong winds are all expected to affect parts of the UK over the next day or so, bringing hazardous conditions at times."
Motorists are warned to check weather forecasts and road conditions before they travel, the Highways Agency said.
Spokesman Jason Glasson said: "I advise drivers to plan ahead before setting out. Check the Met Office weather forecast and road conditions and allow extra time if travel conditions are poor, or delay the journey if conditions are really severe."
