Ricky Gervais may have wit enough to cope with most of the A-listers around him at the Golden Globes, but he hadn't reckoned with the fortitude of one little lady.
When he introduced Madonna as the guest presenter of the Prize for Best Foreign Film, he tried his luck with a few easy lines.. "She's always in vogue... and *coughs* still like a virgin... here's Madonna."
Nothing Madonna hasn't heard before, undoubtedly, so she came on ready and willing.
She started tentatively with: "If I'm still like a virgin, why don't you do something about it?"
And then landed the killer blow: "I haven't kissed a girl in some time."
It was a good night for Madonna, also taking home the Golden Globe for Best Original Song.
She won for Masterpiece, her own contribution to her film W.E, a drama about the love story of Wallis Simpson and Edward VIII, out in the UK this week.
This will be more favourably received than the brickbats from multiple critics when she presented the film at the Venice Film Festival.
The last time Madonna won a Golden Globe was for her 1996 film, Evita, when she won the Best Actress prize for her role of Eva Peron.
