The solar halo
While much of Britain labours under angry, weeping skies, here’s a series of stunning photographs to make you feel even worse about our ‘drought’.
Over in Huangshan city, Anhui Province, in China, a rare and beauty celestial occurrence broke out, causing photographers to scramble like mad in order to capture a ‘solar halo’.
The perfect circle that hangs in the sky is not, alas, the opening of a cosmic door that will lead us to utopia but an optical illusion caused by a high sun shining through ice crystals in high-altitude clouds.
What it does provide is the opportunity to take photographs like these, where objects such as trees, street lights, or, if we’d been there - our own grinning heads- can be framed with a heavenly glow.
The only drawback, of course, is that your bog standard British rainbow will now look about as exciting as a carrier bag-strewn puddle.
