UK Uncut Hold Anti-Cuts Street Party Outside Nick Clegg's House

Anti-Cuts Party Held On Nick Clegg's Doorstep

Campaigners from the anti-austerity group UK Uncut held an anti-cuts Jubilee street party on Saturday, swarming to the road on which Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg lives in Putney, London.

Scores of the protestors, believed to be as many as 200, descended on the up-market suburb of the Liberal Democrat leader to demonstrate against the coalition government's programme of spending cuts.

Murray Worthy, a spokesman for UK Uncut, told the Huffington Post UK that the protests were a response to the government's decision to cut public spending and force the public to pay for a crisis they didn't start, rather than "crack down" on tax avoidance by corporations and rich individuals.

Worthy said the street party format was chosen as, while Prime Minister David Cameron has urged the public to hold street parties in honour of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations next weekend, they wanted to "celebrate the public services rather than the Jubilee".

When asked whether UK Uncut felt protesting outside Clegg's house was too personal an attack, Worthy responded that the cuts imposed by the government were themselves "personal" and affecting vulnerable individuals.

Although police have said that the deputy prime minister is not currently at home, Worthy added that UK Uncut hoped he would "take a long, hard look at himself" and reverse the government's agenda, saying that austerity "was not what the public voted for."

The party was one of 11 organised by UK Uncut across the country, with others held in places such as Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle and York, intended to draw attention to the effects the government's policies are having on individuals.

The group are planning a series of protests and demonstrations across the country in the run-up the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Celebrations and this summer's Olympic Games in London.

The group have said on their website they "plan to block major roads and high streets up and down the country to call for a ‘future uncut’ and protest the government’s cuts, austerity agenda and the closure of local public services."

One protestor, identified as Jean Sandler, explained that the group have chosen Mr Clegg's house because he is one of the "architects" of the "unnecessary and ideological" austerity programme.

In a video, which you can watch below, Ms Sandler urges the deputy prime minister to "listen up" and reverse changes to services such as the NHS and benefit schemes such as the disabled living allowance.

"The cuts are a political choice of this government and the Cabinet of out of touch millionaires, they are not necessary.

"No one voted for Cameron and Clegg's disastrous plan that means that we end up paying for the banks' crisis.

"These cruel cuts are designed to destroy our public services, the NHS, the Welfare state and our future.

"The cuts are getting personal and so are our protests."

London is not the only place where Clegg has been targeted – protesters have also targeted the Lib Dem leader's constituency office in Sheffield.

Meanwhile, protesters have targeted corporate tax dodging in Manchester and Nottingham, with campaigners focusing on Chancellor George Osborne, equating him to the rotten Sheriff of Nottingham from the Robin Hood legend.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said there were no reported arrests outside the property in Putney.

A spokesman for the deputy prime minister said: "People have a right to peaceful protest."

Commenting on the action which mimicked next week's street parties marking the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, Mark Serwotka, general secretary of the Public and Commercial Services union, said: "Our union is as one with UK Uncut activists in their fight against this Government's needless and politically motivated cuts. And we applaud their innovative and inspirational action that takes the campaign right to the doorsteps of those responsible.

"We would like to see more of this kind of community campaigning, linking up with unions, arguing for the alternative to spending cuts, for investment to improve our public services and to protect our communities from what this arrogant Government is trying to do."
