London's transport network will feel the strain today as the start of the athletics prompts the busiest day of the Olympics so far.
More than 200,000 spectators and accredited workers are expected to travel to Stratford today, day seven of London 2012, as the Olympic Stadium opens for athletics events.
Transport for London (TFL) said public transport services and roads to the Olympic Park will be exceptionally busy and urged anyone who is not coming to the site to avoid the area and to take advantage of what is on offer in other parts of the capital.
Westfield Stratford City will only be accessible to accredited workers; people with, or collecting, Games tickets; or those using hospitality venues between 10.30am and 5pm today and tomorrow.
All other people are urged to avoid the area and enjoy attractions in other parts of London, including Live Sites, free concerts, restaurants and bars and West End plays and other attractions.
The Docklands Light Railway, Jubilee and Central lines are expected to be busier than usual, especially in the morning, evening and late evening peaks. And driving in central London should be avoided where possible, TFL said.
London's Transport Commissioner Peter Hendy said: "This Friday and Saturday will be the busiest days of the Games so far as the Olympic Stadium opens its doors and sporting events continue to take place across the capital.
"Westfield Stratford City may not be open to shoppers without a ticket during these times but London has a rich and vast array of other attractions to offer during the Games, so I encourage everyone to enjoy the theatres, restaurants, shops, free concerts, Live Sites and attractions and to continue to use GetAheadoftheGames.com to plan your journeys."
TFL's key travel advice for today includes urging non-Games passengers to try to avoid the busiest times and places.
Events will be taking place at the Olympic Park, ExCeL, North Greenwich Arena, Greenwich Park, Royal Artillery Barracks, Horse Guards Parade, Earl's Court, Lord's Cricket Ground, Wimbledon and Wembley Arena.
Games Lanes are operating flexibly, so people should check the electronic roadside message signs, and drivers should plan ahead and allow more time.
