Kim Jong Run: North Korean Leader Visits Gym

Kim Jong-un told reporters that treadmills and exercise bikes were his preferred exercise equipment, during a visit to a Pyongyang gym in North Korea.

The portly Supreme Leader may seem an unlikely proponent of healthy living but during a tour of an exercise centre in the capital he revealed his fascination with fitness.

It is motivated by desire to see office workers "devote themselves to the revolutionary work" according to state news agency KCNA.

“He is always deeply concerned for the promotion of people’s health and living standards” the news agency added, a controversial statement in a country known for its a poor human rights record, where up to nearly a third of children under five show signs of malnourishment.

His latest photo op comes in the wake of shots showing Kim Jong-un in a more Western light, prompting speculation that the North Korean might be embarking on a more relaxed style of leadership compared to his late father Kim Jong-il.

Pictured with his new wife dressed in Western clothes and sporting a stylish hairstyle, recent pictures of Kim Jong-un have seen him laughing on a rollercoaster, watching Disney characters with his generals and pointing at an octopus at a theme park.

However his last visit to military units on an island southwest of the country's capital was a PR disaster after the North Korean family chosen to pose with him looked absolutely petrified.

Pictures released from this year's Arirang mass games performance showed that North Korea is still a nation proud of its communist character.
