CHOICE AWARDS: Call The Midwife Is Night's Big Surprise

Call the Midwife caused a big surprise at the TVChoice Awards on Monday evening, scooping the gong for Best New Drama out from under the rug of international hit Homeland, while Midwife star Miranda Hart picked up the trophy for Best Actress.

The cast of Call the Midwife enjoyed a surprise win at the TVChoice Awards

Steven Moffat was a big winner at the Awards in London, with his pet project Doctor Who again collecting the gong for Best Family Drama, and his contemporary take on an old favourite, Sherlock, scooping Best Drama.

And one of his leading men, Benedict Cumberbatch, collected honours for Best Actor, too.

The Awards were handed out over dinner at London's Dorchester Hotel.

Keith Lemon and Jeremy Kyle both picked up Awards for the second year running in their respective categories, and Top Gear and I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! won again.

The Hairy Bikers and Mrs Brown's Boys were both first-time winners in the Awards, voted for by readers of TVChoice magazine.

In the soaps field, the lead acting trophies were shared between Coronation Street and EastEnders, with Corrie's Michelle Keegan taking Best Actress, and Best Actor going to Shane Richie. EastEnders' Tony Discipline was named Best Newcomer, while Best Soap made its way back to Albert Square.
