Former England captain Andrew Strauss has revealed Kevin Pietersen apologised to him in person for his conduct in the summer although uncertainty still lingers over the batsman's international future.
Pietersen sent "provocative text messages" regarding Strauss to South Africa players after the teams' second Test draw at Headingley during the summer.
In spite of being named man of the match at Yorkshire, Pietersen was dropped from the squad for the third Test defeat at Lord's due to his behaviour.
Strauss, who retired from all forms of cricket after 2-0 series loss but insisted Pietersen's antics had not been instrumental in his decision, on Thursday clarified he met Pietersen face-to-face.
"We had a good chat and he apologised to me, which was great," the 35-year-old two-time Ashes winner told the BBCat the Professional Cricketers' Association end-of-season awards in Battersea.
His successor as skipper, Alastair Cook also spoke about Pietersen's exile from the England Test and limited overs sides after it was confirmed this week the 31-year-old Surrey star would not be travelling with the team for the winter Test series in India.
"I did have a meeting with Kev and I have been involved in meetings. Clearly the issues haven't been resolved and that is why he is not available for selection at the moment," Cook confirmed.
"Time hopefully will be a healer and we will be able to move on [but] the issues will still have to be resolved before Kevin plays for England again."
Pietersen retired from limited overs international cricket in May a week after he was fined for comments he made about Sky Sports pundit and former England batsman Nick Knight.
But he is determined to return to the Test scene for England's tour of New Zealand in the new year and has pondered over reversing his one-day decision.
