A Conservative politician who was under investigation after making racist remarks about immigrant children has lost his West Sussex council seat.

John Cherry caused a row earlier this week after claiming that Pakistani children would fail to "rise to the top" and some nationalities were "uncertain" what hard work is about.

The ex-Chichester councillor was responding to proposals by a south London academy to open an Eton-style boarding school in the West Sussex countryside.

He warned that the children would want to "escape into the forest - it will be a sexual volcano".

He resigned after makig the remarks but by then it was too late to withdraw his name from the ballot paper for the Midhurst seat.

The Tories had begun action to suspend Mr Cherry before his resignation with a party spokesman saying the comments were "totally unacceptable" and that they "do not reflect the views of the Conservative Party".

A local reporter from the Midhurst and Petworth Observer said Cherry made a swift exit from the polling station without stopping to talk to the media. Independent Gordan Mcara won the seat of Midhurst in Chichester.
