Brazil 2-2 England: Three Lions Denied Historic Win (PICTURES)

Denied At The Death

England were denied a historic victory against Brazil thanks to Paulinho's 82nd-minute equaliser at the Maracanã stadium.

Joe Hart was the outstanding performer in a pathetic first 45 from England. The Manchester City goalkeeper was faultless as he denied Neymar, Hulk and Filipe Luís.

The abysmal Theo Walcott tested Júlio César in England's only major chance ahead of the interval, with Frank Lampard's token strike easily handled by the Queens Park Rangers stopper.

Fred opened the scoring just before the hour when he reacted to Hernanes's strike pinging off Hart's crossbar.

Wayne Rooney puts England ahead on 79 minutes

Substitute Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, whose father Mark played in the Maracanã in England's 1984 win against Brazil, slammed home an excellent equaliser on 67 minutes as England capitalised on their best spell of the match.

Wayne Rooney's looping effort deflected in 12 minutes later in what was a timely reminder of the forward's class for potential club suitors, only England's advantage lasted three minutes when Paulinho volleyed past Hart following Lucas Moura's perceptive cross.

England's victory on Brazilian soil 29 years ago remains the last time a European team won in the five-time World Cup winners' homeland.
