A giant mural of Jesus breakdancing was unveiled on Tuesday.

The artwork has been painted on a 8.5 metre wall in Stokes Croft in Bristol, directly opposite Banksy's Mild Mild West.

Artist Cosmo Sarson spent four days and used a kilogram of glitter to create the mural, called Breakdancing Jesus.

Mr Sarson's piece is inspired by an event at the Vatican where breakdancers performed to an applauding Pope John Paul II in 2004.

The mural, which has been commissioned by The Canteen following a competition, will remain on the wall beside the venue for the next two years.

Sean Redmond, director of the Facade Gallery and judge of the competition, said: "The work raises questions about the role of organised religions in contemporary society and also about how Christ would interact and communicate with contemporary culture if he returned today."

Jamie Pike, of The Canteen, added: "Breakdancing Jesus represents everything Bristol should be proud of.

"We have a proud history of religious tolerance, incredible cultural diversity and a vibrant creative history. Breakdancing Jesus is a celebration of that."
