Using nothing more than 2,000 super-strong magnets, a supercooled puck of yttrium barium copper oxide and the advanced scientific knowledge of the Royal Institution's best minds, somebody has built a really cool race track.
When cooled using liquid nitrogen, it's possible to levitate small amounts of superconducting material above rare-earth magnets.
To illustrate their properties the RI used 2,000 magnets to build a looped track which resembles something from the new Mario Kart game - and then sent the superconductor whizzing around.

The video they produced to explain the experiment is interesting and thorough, but if this doesn't lead to the immediate adoption of zero-gravity racing by Formula One, it will have all been a waste of time.
