Bernie Nolan died today aged 52 after a long battle with cancer, her publicist confirmed.

As lead singer of the hit Irish girlband, The Nolans, Bernie toured the world with her siblings Linda, Anne, Maureen and Coleen before various line-up changes.

The group were best known for their number one song 'I'm in the Mood For Dancing' but also had hits with 'Don't Make Waves', 'Who's Gonna Rock You', 'Gotta Pull Myself Together' and 'Attention To Me' from their 1980 album 'Making Waves'.

The sisters also gained prominence as guest performers on numerous television shows and were incredibly popular in Japan.

In 1995, longstanding lead singer Bernie left to pursue an acting career and notably appeared in 'Brookside' and 'The Bill'. But in 2009, The Nolans reformed for a one-off concert tour in Ireland and in the UK, spawning an album and DVD.
