Hackney Shooting Victim Named

A teenage girl shot dead yesterday has been named in news reports and on social media as Shereka Marsh.

Police were called to reports of a shooting at a residential address in Eastway in Hackney, east London, shortly before 4pm.

The London Ambulance Service and London's Air Ambulance attended but the 15-year-old girl was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two 16-year-old boys and a 15-year-old boy were arrested nearby and taken to an east London police station where they remain in custody.

Police said a gun was recovered from the house in Eastway.

Tributes have been paid to the victim on Twitter and Facebook - but the girl has not been formally identified by police.

A Facebook page called 'R.I.P. Shereka' had more than 5,000 likes this morning.

Azmina Bhamji commented on the page: "The good die young.. Another angel up in heaven, she's up there smiling at everyone, rest in peace princess."

Jessica Leonard posted: "Rest in peace beautiful Shereka you will be missed loads and we all miss you loads already."

Kerrease Jan Baptiste commented: "Shereka is going to be the brightest star in the sky."

The person who set up the page posted that Shereka was "Loved By Everyone", and described her as a "Beautiful Angel".

On Twitter, @tee_brownie tweeted: "Rest In Perfect Paradise Shereka Marsh, heaven has gained another angel gone to soon, I love you."

@NayyLDN tweeted: "I remember when we used to do athletics and football together, Rest in peace shereka marsh."

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "Officers believe they know the identity of the deceased and have begun informing family, however they await formal identification.

"Detectives from the Met's Homicide and Major Crime Command are investigating."

A post-mortem examination started this morning at Poplar Mortuary. The body is not expected to be formally identified until tomorrow.

Police have been standing guard outside the terraced house where the shooting happened.

A two-man forensics team arrived at the house shortly after 11am today, both wearing plastic overalls and face masks.

The street, which backs on to Wick Woodland, remains closed to allow detectives to carry out their inquiries.

It is just yards from the site of the Olympic media centre and minutes from the Olympic park.
