Helping Train Guide Dog Puppies Is The Best Volunteering Work EVER

Let's face it, volunteering looks great on your CV, but may not always be the most attractive option. Unless you're working with adorable little bundles of fur, that is.

So it's pretty good timing that Guide Dogs is on the hunt for thousands of new student volunteers throughout the UK as part of Volunteers' Week in June.

Students who miss their family pets while living in halls might find volunteering as a ‘free runner’ the job for them. By taking a guide dog for a walk for its owner, you’ll get in a doggy date while also helping the charity.

Current Guide Dogs volunteer and student Charlotte Stephenson says: "Volunteering for Guide Dogs has given me both experience and confidence. The skills I have gained have helped me in many areas of my life, including being able to make presentations and take on leading roles at university. Because of my work with Guide Dogs, I was even shortlisted for Volunteer of the Year, which was an amazing experience.

"I am visually impaired myself but until I started volunteering, I didn’t realise how much I could personally benefit from the charity and have since become a guide dog owner."

To look for the right role near you, simply visit the website and enter your postcode to discover what opportunities are available near your college of university.

This year Volunteers’ Week, an annual celebration of the UK’s fantastic volunteers run by the National Council for Volunteering Organisation, celebrates its 30th anniversary and takes place between 1 - 7 June 2014.
