William Carvalho To Arsenal - Transfer Talk

Is This Man Arsenal's New Defensive Midfielder?

William Carvalho has been linked with Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United but remains a Sporting Lisbon midfielder for now. That could all be about to change.

Sporting have supposedly lowered their £33 million asking price for the 22-year-old defensive midfielder, which could appeal to Arsenal, whose performance at Everton re-emphasised they are still lacking steel.

Carvalho played twice for Portugal at the World Cup but was sent off in Sporting's opening game of the season at Académica de Coimbra and is currently sidelined through suspension.

The Gunners' need for a striker is even greater after Olivier Giroud suffered a suspected broken ankle and the two likeliest candidates to bolster Arsenal's forward line are Danny Welbeck and Loïc Rémy.

Staying in north London, and Tottenham are willing to pay the £8m release clause for Sevilla captain Federico Fazio. Spurs are yet to conceded a goal this season.

Possibly leaving White Hart Lane is Andros Townsend, whose Spurs future depends on the club's pursuit of Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin.

Chelsea are now in talks to sign Roma forward Mattia Destro, according to his agent.

Hull will have to look elsewhere for a new striker after refusing to pay Blackburn the £12m it will take to prise Jordan Rhodes away from Ewood Park. Rhodes could submit a transfer request to force through a move, though.

Sebastián Coates, one of the remnants of Kenny Dalglish's damaging second stint at Liverpool, could link up with fellow Uruguayan Gus Poyet at Sunderland in a loan deal.

And poor Carlton "Can't Control" Cole actually scored for West Ham at the weekend but is being linked with a £1m move to Championship club Bournemouth.
