Jemima Khan appears to have kick-started the latest charity-meets-social media craze, launching the #WakeUpCall campaign to raise funds for Unicef.
So far, plenty of celebrities have taken part, including ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ presenter Claudia Winkleman and fashion designer Laura Bailey.
Jemima Khan launched the campaign on Monday morning
The campaign aims to highlight the 6.5 million children who are living in Syria as conflict there rages on.
Participants are encouraged to post a photo of themselves, taken moments after waking up, on social-networking sites, before donating to Unicef’s Syria Emergency Fund.
Earlier this year, the #icebucketchallenge took Twitter, Instagram and Facebook by storm, as everyone from Anna Wintour and Benedict Cumberbatch to Rita Ora and Lauren Goodger took part.
Claudia is one of the first celebrities to get involved
The challenge’s hashtag notched up over 4 million mentions on Twitter and millions of pounds was raised by charities including the ALS Association in the US and Macmillan in the UK.
While #WakeUpCall participants are encouraged to nominate people to take part, Jemima has been keen to emphasise that everybody can get involved, whether you receive a nomination or not.
You can donate to Unicef’s appeal for the Zaatari camp at www.wakeupcall.org.uk or by texting SYRIA to 70007 to give £5.
