How To Embrace Your Individual Style

How To Embrace Your Individual Style

When it comes to individuality and style, finding a look that reflects your personality and makes you feel amazing is no easy feat.

We are constantly being bombarded with what to wear and how to wear it - and that's before we scroll through our Instagram feed full of OOTD (outfits of the day) styled to within an inch by those seemingly effortless fashion types.

Yes, it can be soul-destroying trawling through rails of the latest trends and panic-buying something you know doesn't actually suit. But there's nothing more liberating than bucking the trend and wearing what you feel happy and confident in.

Team MyDaily attended the TK Maxx 'Style By Me' debate hosted by Dawn O'Porter to get a few style pointers on how to embrace individuality when it comes to your wardrobe.

Our fashion gurus included legendary fashion journalist Hilary Alexander OBE, designer Zandra Rhodes, celebrity stylist Andrew Davis and uber-vlogger Jim Chapman.

And ladies, can we just talk about the hair? Best bobs in the business.

Here are the need-to-knows...

1. Confidence is everything

You know that thing when ditch the outfit you'd planned on wearing because it was too out there and immediately feel rubbish in your BORING black jeans?

Dawn O'Porter's advice is spot on: "You're never going to regret the awesome outfit," she said, before telling us the average age a woman feels most confident about her style is 29.

It takes time and experimenting with different looks to know what works says Zandra Rhodes, "Confidence will come with getting it right."

2. Experiment

Yes, with mass produced catwalk copies it's easy to feel like everyone's wearing exactly the same.

But as Hilary Alexander said, "It's basically pick and mix right now. You can by 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s on the high street."

Experimenting with eclectic styles from different eras has never been easier. Hilary's advice? "Find something you love and build your wardrobe around it."

3. Don't get preoccupied with being "in fashion"

"Individualism really flowers in this country!" said Zandra.

"People come to fashion week and you see them making their own statements. It's wonderful to see their excitement and keenness."

Style-savvy shoppers will always look to catwalk trends for inspiration, but trying too hard is never a good look. It's time to stop worrying what other people think and start making your own statement.
