Charlie Brooker's 2009 Video Gets Media Coverage Of Charleston Shooting Spot On

Charlie Brooker's 2009 Video On Shootings In The Media Is Still Totally Relevant

A clip from a 2009 episode of Charlie Brooker's Newswipe has become strikingly relevant once again following the Charleston shooting.

The three-minute video comments on the media's dramatic and persistent coverage of mass murderers in the wake of the Winnenden school massacre carried out by Tim Kretschmer in Germany.

Talking about the 'vulture-like rolling news stations,' Brooker said: "Reportedly showing us a killer's face isn't news, it's just rubbernecking, and whats more, this sort of coverage only serves to turn this little twat into some kind of nihilistic pin-up boy."

Brooker also pulls in a clip in which forensic psychiatrist, Dr Park Dietz, says: "We've had 20 years of mass murders, throughout which I have repeatedly told CNN and other medias, if you don't want to propagate mass murders, don't start the story with sirens playing.

"Don't photograph the killer. Don't make this 24/7 coverage. Do everything you can not to make out the body count the lead story. Try not to make the killer some kind of anti-hero.

"Do localise this story to the affected community and make it as boring as possibly in every other market, because every time we have intense saturation coverage of any kind of mass murder, we expect to see one or two more within a week."
