Having Sex More Than Three Times A Week Could Help Men Pass Kidney Stones (According To Science)

Why Lots Of Sex Could Help Relieve Kidney Stones

Sex is great. It's an excellent alternative to exercise, it makes you feel good and it could - believe it or not - get rid of kidney stones.

A Turkish health study found that men who had sex more than three times a week were more likely to spontaneously 'pass' a kidney stone than guys who didn't.

The study randomly split 75 men with kidney stones into three groups.

The first group was asked to have sex between three and four times a week, the second group was given tamsulosin (a drug used to improve urination for guys with enlarged prostates) and the third group was given standard medical treatment for kidney stones.

In a two-week follow-up, group one had the highest success rate as 26 of the 31 participants were able to pass their kidney stones.

Meanwhile in group two, just 10 of the 21 participants were able to pass a kidney stone, compared with eight of the 23 participants in group three.

The study, which was conducted at the Ankara Training and Research Hospital, was published in the journal Urology.

The average size of stones that were passed was 4.7 millimetres.

Kidney stones are formed from the waste products in blood which sometimes form small crystals. These crystals then collect in the kidneys and, over time, can become a hard stone-like lump.

They typically occur in people who don't drink enough water, are taking a certain type of medication, or have a medical condition that raises the levels of certain substances in their urine.

According to NHS Choices, most kidney stones will be small enough to pass through urine.

To prevent them, drink plenty of water, as keeping your urine diluted will prevent waste products from forming into stones.

Finally - no, you can't pass a kidney stone during sex.
