We're not suggesting for a moment that you haven't heard of Country Life, the magazine for rich folk in the country who have horses and whatnot, but they may have just about pulled off the best publicity stunt.
Because looking at their '39 steps to being a gentleman', which includes 'knows the difference between a rook and a crow' and 'singing lustily in church', they cannot be serious.
Written by Rupert Uloth, deputy editor, who also deems lilac socks as anathema, the list does feature some suggestions which aren't totally heinous such as switching your mobile off at the dinner table, not letting the door slam in someone's face and 'demonstrates that making love is neither a race or a competition.'
Oh - and one us women can get on board with - ends a relationship face to face. (Take notes, Russell Brand and Phil Collins).

However some of them, chaps, were not very popular among the women in the office. They included Uloth's issue with Puerto Rico (apparently you shouldn't go there - JLo won't be happy) and the ability to undo a woman's bra strap with one hand.
Personally, we love Debrett's definition of chivalry and being a gentleman: "The modern British man should aim for appropriate gestures that come instinctively, rather than contrived behaviour that feels out-dated and oppressive."
