Viewers were stunned as Linda Henry’s character forced Dean’s head under water as he took a bath, after she walked in on him trying to rape fiancée Roxy Mitchell (Rita Simons).
After witnessing the attack, Shirley came to the realisation that Linda (Kellie Bright) had been telling the truth about Dean’s assault on her last year, and she took matters into her own hands to resolve the situation.
Shirley tried to drown her son after realising he raped Linda
Having tricked Dean into believing she would help him leave Walford, Shirley told him to take a bath to ensure police could not find any evidence on him that he had attacked Roxy.
As she told him she loved him, she plunged Dean’s head under water and held him down, in scenes that recalled the time Shirley tried to drown her other son Mick (Danny Dyer) when he was just a young child, unable to cope with being a teen mother.
While it looked like she had succeeded in killing her son as his body laid lifeless in the bottom of the bath, Dean soon lurched out of the water, just as Linda stormed into the flat.
The Queen Vic landlady was then stunned when Dean finally admitted that he had raped her, before he quickly fled.

The scenes set up the plot for its New Year’s Day climax, when Dean turns up at Linda and Mick’s wedding, seeking revenge on Shirley.
Spoiler pictures have already revealed that he pushes Shirley in a lake, and when Mick turns up to rescue her, a fight between the brothers breaks out - and it looks like one may meet a watery grave.
‘EastEnders’ airs these scenes on New Year’s Day at 6.30pm and 8pm on BBC One.
