David Cameron Backs Release Of Chancellor George Osborne's Tax Returns

David Cameron believes Chancellor George Osborne should release information about his tax returns, Downing Street has said.

The Prime Minister's official spokeswoman said Mr Cameron thinks it is right for PMs, "potential prime ministers", chancellors and shadow chancellors to "show greater transparency" by putting information about the taxes they pay into the public domain.

A Treasury source last night said that Mr Osborne was "happy to consider" ways to offer greater transparency, after he came under pressure from Labour and the Scottish National Party to match Mr Cameron's publication of information from his own tax returns dating back to 2009-10.

The Prime Minister was due to face questions in Parliament over his personal finances as he appears before MPs for the first time since it emerged he had profited from an offshore fund.

As MPs return to Westminster following the Easter break, Mr Cameron will make a statement on the measures the Government is taking to tackle tax dodging and corruption ahead of an international summit in London in May.

Asked whether Mr Cameron thought all MPs should publish their tax returns, the Prime Minister's spokeswoman said: "When it comes to publishing tax returns, the PM has made clear that he was willing to be transparent and that it is right for potential prime ministers to also do so.

"The Prime Minister takes the view that chancellors and shadow chancellors should show transparency too, but he is not recommending that it should be the same for everyone else involved in politics... It is right to focus on those who are in charge of the nation's finances."
