Children as young as 12 are knocking back the equivalent of NINETEEN glasses of wine a week a survey has found.

The shocking figures came to light as 83,000 school pupils were quizzed about their drinking habits.

A staggering four per cent of 12 and 13-year-olds claimed they drank at least 28 units week - which is more than the recommended amount for a grown man - whilst more than 10 per cent of youngsters aged 14 or 15 said they consumed 10 or more.

Despite this, the annual review undertaken by the Schools Health Education Unit found fewer children claimed to have been drunk than in past years.

Speaking to the Mirror, Birmingham GP Dr Paul Whiting said the numbers were "astonishing", warning: "The smaller the person, the bigger effect."

The alcohol charity Addaction said the survey highlighted the need for help for young drinkers, saying: "It's essential these kids get support."
