It is not known why the whales migrated towards the shallow water.

There were no visible injuries and no signs of the animals becoming caught in fishing nets.

There are suspicions that the animals may have become disorientated.

Footage of the whales in shallow waters, as well as the rescue efforts, was shared by PROFEPA.

The organisation said that it will be collecting evidence to investigate what caused the incident.

There are plans to bury the whales on the shore.

Whale beachings have hit the headlines in recent months.

More than 30 sperm whales have been beached since the start of the year in the UK, Netherlands, France, Germany and Denmark.

Plastic pollution has been listed as the cause of death for 13 sperm whales who died off the German coast.
