Two dozen pilot whales have died after becoming beached in Mexico, despite hours of desperate rescue efforts by residents and the military.
The 24 whales died after wandering into shallow waters off the Gulf of California.
Just two adults and a calf were able to be rescued.
It is not known why the whales migrated towards the shallow water.
There were no visible injuries and no signs of the animals becoming caught in fishing nets.
There are suspicions that the animals may have become disorientated.
Footage of the whales in shallow waters, as well as the rescue efforts, was shared by PROFEPA.
The organisation said that it will be collecting evidence to investigate what caused the incident.
There are plans to bury the whales on the shore.
