UPDATE: The 3Doodler has already doubled its funding target of $30,000 mere hours after its launch on Kickstarter.

A 3D Printing Pen has been unveiled which can let artists 'draw' sculptures in mid-air.

The '3Doodler' is a new take on 3D printing, which has been around for more than a decade but is only just starting to break into the mainstream.

The project, which was launched on Kickstarter today seeking $30,000 in funding. It met - and then doubled - that target in hours.

The design is simple - plug it in, start to draw and watch as corn-based 'bio' plastic comes out of the pen at 270 degrees C and solidifies in place, allowing you to create 3D objects without a computer.

"Everyone knows how to use a pen, so we designed a 3D printing pen! If you can scribble, trace or wave a finger in the air you can use a 3Doodler. As you draw, plastic comes out of the pen, is cooled by an integrated fan, and solidifies right in front of you. You can draw on any surface and lift it up into the air to create your own 3D objects," said Maxwell Bogue, Co-Founder & CTO of WobbleWorks.

The pen has been in development for over a year, and is set to launch commercial - Kickstarter funding depending - in the autumn.
