In the early morning of Tuesday 17 May the city of Portsmouth, New Hampshire was treated to a particularly impressive light show courtesy of an absolutely enormous fireball.
The meteor, which appears to have burnt up in the atmosphere, briefly turned night into day as it streaked over the city.
Spotted at around one in the morning, the blinding flash was spotted all around the Northwest by witnesses in Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, New York and even Quebec.
While many were simply woken by the light, others claim they heard and felt a sonic boom suggesting that a meteorite may have broken through the atmosphere.
Normally meteors simply burn up on entry, however particularly large objects can break through and crash down to the surface.
The American Meteor Society claims to have had over 690 reports about the incident suggesting that this wasn't your average fireball.
