Despite its immense popularity amongst tourists, Italy's renowned Amalfi Coast remains rich in authenticity and drenched in traditional culture.

Between June and October each year, thousands of sun-seekers from across the globe make their way through the infamous windy roads of Italy's iconic Southern Coastline and it's certainly no mystery as to why.

Between the crystal clear water, indulgent European sunshine and unrivalled flavoursome food, the Campania region is most definitely a repeat-worthy destination.

While the locals could justifiably protest the onslaught of camera-clutching backpackers, families, honeymooners and holiday-makers; visitors are quite literally welcomed with outstretched arms and an invitation for a slice of (real) margarita and drop (or two) vino, in true Italian style.

What may surprise some about the celebrity-frequented coastline is its affordability - if you look in the right places. With "Italian Adventure" tours available from the likes of Busabout Europe for as little as £185, budget travellers can look forward to ticking (rather than crossing) Amalfi off the list.

Whether you're stealing a weekend of sunshine or lapping up La Dolce Vita for as long as you can manage, there are a few experiences you must seek to get a real taste of what this piece of passionate paradise has to offer...

1. A PIT STOP IN POMPEII

Marked by the "heart of Campania" Mount Vesuvius, which erupted over the city in 79AD, Pompeii makes for a very worthy and history-rich stop en route to Sorrento if you're driving from Rome. Take a guided tour through the remarkable ruins and marvel at the sophistication of the ancient civilisation, which has been preserved by the volcanic ash that covered it thousands of years ago.

2. A PEEK FROM THE PEAK: ISLE OF CAPRI

If you can't afford to stay on the island itself, the gorgeous town of Sorrento, which is known as the gateway to the Amalfi Coast, proves a very worthy alternative at only a short boat ride from Capri itself. Once on the island, take a convertible taxi to Anacapri and ride the chairlift to its peak for a view your lens will love and you certainly won't forget.

3. A DIP IN THE TYRRHENIAN SEA

Pop down to Positano for the day and explore the colourful streets before setting out in a boat to see the gorgeous grottos. Diving into open water feels surprisingly safe when you can see straight to the bottom, not to mention is a fabulous way to earn yourself the next bowl of tomato tagliatelle, which you absolutely must have of course.
