Adam Gemili has become the fastest junior British sprinter of all time after running the 100metres at the World Junior Championships with a personal best 10.05 seconds.

Gemili, 18, ran 10.08 in May when he finished second at the Olympics trials, but on Wednesday night he overtook Dwain Chambers' 10.06.

He said the dash had left him "speechless", before summoning up the words to admit he "never thought that would happen".

Gemili's record surpassed Trinidadian Darrel Brown's 10.09 junior championship record in 2002 and he has become the fourth British champion in the event over the last 14 years. Christian Malcolm (1998), Mark Lewis-Francis (2000) and Harry Aikines-Aryeetey (2006) preceded him.

In November 2011 Gemili was playing non-league football on loan at Thurrock, but is now emerging as one of Great Britain's most exciting athletes.

He will compete at the London 2012 Olympic Games in the 100m for Team GB and may also run in the 4x100m relay.
