It has now been 10 years since the US-led invasion of Afghanistan was launched on 6 October 2001.
"Operation Enduring Freedom" began in the aftermath of the September 2001 terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, and was intended to quickly remove the 'terrorist safe-haven' Taliban government and track down Osama Bin Laden.
The operation is now the longest-lasting war in American history. Opinions are split on the progress the country has made. While gains have been reported in access to health care and human rights, and while Bin Laden was captured and killed earlier this year, Afghanistan is still politically unstable and is currently facing a crippling drought.
More than 2,500 troops have been killed since the launch of the invasion, including 382 British troops and Ministry of Defence civilians. The majority of the troops killed have been US soldiers.
Upwards of 10,000 civilians have been killed in the past five years, according to the UN.
