David Cameron has slapped down Tory MP Aidan Burley for making "idiotic" comments about the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games being "multi-cultural crap".
Speaking on Monday afternoon the prime minister said: "I think what he said was completely wrong. It was an idiotic thing to say."
He added: "I did once say something about people who use Twitter, particularly politicians, and I think in this case I was absolutely spot on."
The PM is referring to his controversial claim in 2009 that "too many tweets make a tw*t".
Burley, who was sacked as a ministerial aide after attending a Nazi-themed stag do last year, attracted a barrage of criticism after attacking Danny Boyle's Friday night opening ceremony on Twitter.
"The most leftie opening ceremony I have ever seen - more than Beijing, the capital of a communist state! Welfare tribute next?" he said.
He added: "Thank God the athletes have arrived! Now we can move on from leftie multi-cultural crap. Bring back red arrows (sic), Shakespeare and the Stones!"
Burley defended his tweets and said they had been "misunderstood".
"I was talking about the way it was handled in the show, not multiculturalism itself," he said.
