It's great to see our British theatre industry and its achievements celebrated in such a beautiful and professional way as it is each year at the Laurence Olivier Awards.It's always such fun to walk down the red carpet for something I'm so passionate about and Sunday night was no exception.
There were amazing performances from the legend herself Elaine Paige and my lovely friend and nominee Scarlett Strallen. Sharon D Clark rocked out with a song from Ghost and my pal Brian May performed with the previous winners of the People's Choice Award, the cast of We Will Rock You - a show very dear to my heart which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year.
However it was the young Matildas who stole the night - and very rightly so! They blew the audience away with their performance. It's so special to see such promising talent at such a young age and for this to be recognised by the four girls taking home the Best Actress award is just the way it should be.
The great and the good of the theatre world were there in force, none more welcome at such an event than Sir Tim Rice who was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award. A fitting accolade in recognition of the incredible work he has done and continues to produce.
Another highly acclaimed guest - and well deserved win - was Sir Trevor Nunn, who collected the Best Supporting Actress award for the gorgeous Sheridan Smith who was away filming.
Les Miserables won the People's Choice Award, a perfect choice considering all the excitement around the show after last year's hugely successful 25th anniversary show at the O2 and a major film in the pipeline. Matthew Warchus also made a beautiful acceptance speech from across the pond in New York City for his Best Director award.
The Olivier Awards mean so much to us in theatre world; they're a celebration of pure talent. As singers and actors, we are always trying to perfect our craft, inspire people and provide first class entertainment for everyone - that's why we're in this business in the first place - and there really is tons of truly incredible work out there for people to see and enjoy! I love the west-end and feel privileged to work among such talent.
I would love to see the Awards broadcast nationally once more so that everyone in the country can share in our celebration and we can shine a light onto the premier talent we are producing within London's theatre industry. Hopefully we won't have to wait too long.
