Counter-terrorism police have made three arrests linked to Syria in a series of raids.

A 21-year-old man was arrested at a property in the Handsworth area of Birmingham on Tuesday on suspicion of preparing to travel to the war-torn nation to join Islamic State.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said that the arrest was "pre-planned and intelligence-led" with no immediate threat to public safety.

In a separate operation, officers from Scotland Yard arrested three men in south London.

Two of them, both aged 24, were held in dawn raids by anti-terror officers on suspicion of raising funds for terrorism in Syria. Their homes were searched before they were released on bail later. Two other addresses in the same area were also searched.

The third man, aged 25, remained in custody on Tuesday night on suspicion of possession of cannabis with intent to supply after being arrested at another address in the city.
