Apple has announced its customers spent more than $10 billion in the App Store in 2013 - netting it an impressive cut of around $3 billion.

Unveiling its year-end numbers, Apple said its developers had now earned more than $15 billion from the App Store since it launched in 2008.

The uplift this year - which accelerated to more than 3 billion app downloads and $1 billion in revenue in December alone - was partly helped by the success of iOS 7, which saw many big apps rereleased with new designs. More than 74% of iOS devices were running iOS 7 as of December 2013.

“We’d like to thank our customers for making 2013 the best year ever for the App Store,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services. “The lineup of apps for the holiday season was astonishing and we look forward to seeing what developers create in 2014.”

Apple also called out a number of developers "to watch" in 2014, including the UK's own Frogmind.

Apple added that more than 500,000 native iPad apps are now available in its store.
